Due: August 2, 2022
✨✨✨
"Playlists for 2022" is a playlist zine, by invitation only (receiving the link to this page constitutes an invitation, and is extended to all of my private twitter friends.  This is NOT an open call, don't share this page with others without asking me first ❤️ )  Please RSVP your intention to participate by July 16 (not binding, just so I have an idea of how many people might submit,) and I will expect your finished pieces by August 2.
Please send all correspondence to korimichele@gmail.com (I now realize you can't upload to the google drive folder I had linked here without permissions set so, like, nvm that, just email me the finals or let me know if you want to arrange a different digital hand-off!)
Mock-up for format (not to scale, final book will be 4x4 inches:)
Distribution: Just to get it out of the way, this is a fun friend zine!  Since I'm screen-printing it, it will be a limited run of undetermined number.  At MINIMUM, each participant will receive 3 copies, but my goal is for everyone to get 5 copies.  I will reserve the right to list an undetermined number of the finished zine on my web-shop to attempt to recoup cost of materials and shipping the copies to participants.  That's the scoop!!
This book will be a 4x4 inch book with fold-out pages.  Text pages (Description and Playlist) will be digitally printed in black and white, and illustrated pages (Title and Illustration) will be printed with a 2-color screen-printing process (speedball yellow and cyan.)  The mock-up above should illustrate how the book will be formatted: Your spread will a color illustration on the left, and an illustrated title page on the right.  The left page unfolds to reveal the text pages, a description on the left, and the actual playlist (title and artist) on the right.
Okay, here's what you'll submit:
1. A playlist
Max 13 songs. Theme is loosely "Playlists for 2022," whatever that means to you. A playlist for coping, comfort, your exercise playlist, your Destiel playlist, whatever.  Something you want to share and will be fun to illustrate. Upbeat? Sad? Horny?  It's all good.  Submit text only (email or text file,) I will do the formatting and font choosing.
2. A description/story for the playlist
Text to go with your playlist.  Whatever you want... a description of what to expect, a story behind it, what it's for.  Fiction?  Poetry?  Again, whatever, have fun.  Write whatever context you want to add to the experience. Max ...idk one or two paragraphs? Submit text only (email or text file,) I will do the formatting and font choosing.
3. Illustrations
Okay, the fun part!  Two illustrated facing pages, 4 x 4 inches final each, full bleed okay but not required.  If bleed, please give 1/4 inch bleed on final.  Title should be on the right page.  Illustrations can connect across both pages, but know that it WILL open so seam will not be perfect, and title page should ideally stand on it's own as well.  But, like, whatever, I'm not gonna police it.  Have fun.
Submit two files in layered PSD or CLIP studio format.  You will make my life infinitely easier if they include 2 black or greyscale separations.  If you're not equipped for that, color separations are fine and I will do my best to convert them to workable values.
Clear, thick lines and colors will work best for screenprinting.  Nothing too fine.  If using grey values, please know I WILL be bitmapping them with a medium dither or dot pattern (sorry I can't give you the deets to do it yourself, I don't remember the mesh of my screens lol) so know that you will have to relinquish some control over the exact appearance of the final image and colors.  I will do my best to make it look great.  Some gentle mis-registration can be expected!
Most of you are familiar with two-color processes, especially if you've done any riso, but to be clear: I will print this with transparent blue and yellow ink.  Meaning you have four colors to work with: Blue, yellow, green where they layer, and white where they don't appear. Different values of each color can be created with dot screening, but it will not be super smooth or exact, so please no super soft shading.  It is just the nature of this beast AND my printing skill level that hard-edged and graphic images will work best.
If you want or need help setting up a 2-color process document, let me know!  I'm happy to jump in a zoom call with you and show you how it works!
4. Name and bio
Send me your name (as you'd like to be credited,) a one-sentence bio (can be serious or silly,) and any websites/social medias you want included. Submit text only, in email or text file.
Some maybe helpful graphics for 2-color process (simplified, obvs:)
BTW, do as much work as will be fun.  This is no stress, no stakes.  You don't have to make a new playlist, feel free to use one you've already made.  Heck, you don't even have to make new artwork.  if it fits, re-use something you already drew.  You don't have to use two colors, use just one, if you want!
Okay, I love you, have fun, lmk if you have any questions.  XOXO
